Day 3 Juneau Alaska

DAY THREE
noon to 8:30pm
Juneau

The weather was heavenly!  We rented a car.
Phil had spent a lot of time working here in Juneau.
Here's one of his cell towers.

see it by the white tanks?
Okay bigger then!

It's a process getting off the boat. This was our first time however
Cindy and Jim are pro's so we took their lead.

You can't go below the 3rd floor at port.  Each port has a different set up so they announce
over the PA what floor and side of the ship you can debark. It's always level one.
We always got up early went to breakfast, collected our days bags
and then went to the 3rd floor to wait near the stairs.
You are never going to get an elevator when everyone wants off the boat!
my fitbit shows a whole lot of stairs for this vacation week.

We are NOT the first cruise line in port.  Guess it will be busy in Juneau.
Really these little towns have adapted to become tourist locations.
Juneau has no roads into or out of it.  You come by boat or you fly in.

Everything and I repeat EVERYTHING in Juneau has to come by ship or plane.
All the cargo holders at the dock tells you a lot comes by ship.

We enjoyed being on the deck to watch the docking.
There would still be lots of time before we could unload.
Jim and Phil taking photos!

Before I take us off the boat and into Juneau I wanted to share the only photo
of Phil and Jim in Korea.  So nice they have kept their friendship for so very long!
This photo could be 1970 or 1971.
I didn't know Jim and Cindy were engaged before he went over seas.
Must have been hard for both of them.

I really loved Juneau!!
Even if they did give us a parking ticket at the visitors center!

We shopped at the cute shops and bought handmade where we could.
Jim picked up his Harley of the world shirt (he stops at a shop a location)
Took a peek at the Red Dog Saloon, very old
Drove aimlessly to our GPS which was so wrong Cindy looked maps
up on her phone which is where I put my trust!
Finally we made it to The Mendenhall Glacier.

We had hoped to eat lunch here
It didn't work out.
Off to shopping we go.
it's really nice to be on our own
time frame.

Every time Cindy and I would turn around
the guys would be GONE.  They were so busy
talking they had no idea where we had gone to!
We offered to hold their hands to keep from loosing them.  As long as they are back on that ship by 8:30pm.
Gifts purchased it's time to find that Glacier.

I was surprised at how really little the Glaciers were.
They must have been melting because there was lots of flooding
on the trails they were closed!

Cindy's cell gets us there! Boo GPS..
People have been very friendly here.  I've enjoyed taking family photos for people.
It's fun to watch people take photos, I've seen lots of phone's,
some interesting high tech cameras like Jim's, and then there is the people
who lift up a giant tablet and take a photo, blocking all view to those behind!

The trail to the falls was flooded.

Thanks to Phil we get cell out here and did a few selfies with help.

Mountains every where
Isn't Juneau beautiful?
The citizens are warm and friendly.
The weather helped.
Our final adventure was the mount Roberts tramway
up to the top of 1,800 foot Mt. Roberts.
Cindy and I do not like heights so this was a challenge.

Smile Cindy it's only going UP & UP & straight UP!!

Poor Eagle lost and eye an is now a kept Eagle.

Mt Roberts gift shop, got some lovely frog t-shirts here!

looks like I can hike down if too afraid to get back on the tram...What!! that sign makes the trail look as scary as the tram! It says "steep, muddy, slippery trail with unmarked Hazards. Should not be attempted without hiking boots, water and plenty of time"

Time to return to the ship and get something to eat!
This is how we get back on.   Walk the plank Mate!
Everything has to be scanned when returning.
We show our ships cards and tada back on board!

One last little problem to figure out....OUR PARKING TICKET!

First thing that morning we went to the visitors center, parking is not marked well and really there isn't any.  We got a parking ticket.  Yes in an empty parking lot.  You'd think we were in downtown Seattle the price they charged us!

The black car is our rental

This is where we parked, clear at the other side is a tiny sign saying it's a permit parking lot.  I mean tiny sign. Okay they win there is a sign.  I hope they take my ticket money and buy a bigger sign! Now we can get back on the boat.

First off when returning find the correct ship
we are on Explorer of the Seas.
This is a good time to put your cameras & coats back in the backpack.  They scan easier this way.  Pull out your ships card and walk and walk to the door! Put your "stuff" in a bin push it though the scanner and go through the scanner yourself.   Our world as it is now.
I am relieved we are at port and
NO SEA SICKNESS!!

Lunch even was yummy
and stayed that way!

The evening towel creature, dog?  Rabbit?

tonight the show was Hayden Smith
Great music of the 60's and 70's

Below our room starting at 10:15pm
was Rock Britannia street party
REALLY!

Earplugs.
